Storm Dave brings disruptive and potentially damaging winds across Scotland, with the MET office issuing yellow and amber warnings through Saturday into Easter Sunday morning and across the weekend.  Peak gusts of 50-60 mph will be possible fairly widely, with 60-70 mph in more exposed areas. There is a slight chance of even stronger gusts of 80-90 mph in such exposed areas for a time. Please take care. and refer to our guidance on preparing for storms. We recommend woodland managers and owners read the Scottish Windblow Contingency Plan, while guidance is also available on managing storm damaged trees.

This guide brings together practical advice on site suitability, establishment, silviculture, harvesting, marketing, and processing for growing quality crops of alternative conifer species.

Summary

This guide brings together practical advice on site suitability, establishment, silviculture, harvesting, marketing, and processing for growing quality crops of alternative conifer species.

Some species need a different silvicultural approach than Sitka spruce—often closer to methods used for quality hardwoods. The focus is on effective silviculture to produce high-quality final crops for specific markets, rather than simply maximising volume.

The guide also provides detailed information on selected alternative conifer species suitable for Scotland. It covers their history, potential use, current resources, site suitability, provenance selection, establishment, silviculture, harvesting, marketing, and processing for key end uses.
