How we can help

At Scottish Forestry we support and promote the planting of trees to establish woodlands. The Forestry Grant Scheme (FGS) is the primary source of funding.

Published: 22 Feb 2025

Topic: Planting trees

What scale of proposal can we support?

Through the Forestry Grant Scheme we support the creation of:

  • native woodlands over 0.25 hectares
  • productive woodlands over 2 hectares

All woodlands must be at least 15 metres wide to be eligible.

We do not support the planting of individual trees.

Funding for woodland creation

FGS options cover both productive and non-productive woodlands and are based on the:

  • species you intend to plant

  • density with which you plant them

Applications for grant support take place on the Rural Payments and Services website.

We recommend you read our funding and support page in the first instance.

Farm Woodland Assessments

Scottish Forestry fund a limited number of free Farm Woodland Assessments within the Central Scotland Green Network.

This covers an area stretching from Ayrshire and Inverclyde in the west, to Fife and the Lothians in the east.

Consultants skilled in creating farm woodlands can offer:

  • tailored advice on areas for planting

  • available grants through the Forestry Grant Scheme

  • predicted expenditure and cash flow

  • advice on tree management

The assessments will allow farmers the opportunity to assess the potential for planting. No future obligations apply.

Funding through the Farm Advisory Service (FAS)

Alternatively, you can apply for up to £1,600 of funding through the Farm Advisory Service (FAS).

A specialist adviser will work with the land manager to add value to unproductive land by:

  • reviewing farm-specific opportunities

  • considering available financial incentives (to create or manage woodland)

  • identifying the most suitable grants and assistance packages that farmers and crofters can use

To apply or for more information, call 0300 323 0161 or contact FAS.
