Support for communities

Working with partners, we support communities to use, manage and own woodlands. We also promote the meaningful engagement of communities in decision-making about forestry.

Topic: Using woodlands

Scotland’s forests and woodlands deliver multiple benefits. These include benefits that are:

  • economic - for example, timber production

  • environmental - such as helping address climate change and reverse biodiversity loss

  • social - including improving people’s health and well-being

Our ambition is for more woodlands to be created in Scotland, delivering more of these benefits.

But we need to make sure that communities:

  • have a say in decisions about forests that impact on them

  • enjoy benefits from the woods and forests nearby

To help support flourishing and empowered communities, we work with partners to:

  • promote meaningful community engagement in forestry decision-making processes

  • support communities to manage and own woods and forests

  • encourage people from all backgrounds to use and enjoy woods and forests

  • promote the delivery of more benefits from forestry to local communities, supporting community wealth building
