Storm Dave brings disruptive and potentially damaging winds across Scotland, with the MET office issuing yellow and amber warnings through Saturday into Easter Sunday morning and across the weekend.  Peak gusts of 50-60 mph will be possible fairly widely, with 60-70 mph in more exposed areas. There is a slight chance of even stronger gusts of 80-90 mph in such exposed areas for a time. Please take care. and refer to our guidance on preparing for storms. We recommend woodland managers and owners read the Scottish Windblow Contingency Plan, while guidance is also available on managing storm damaged trees.

Event details

The Mackie family run an organic dairy farm with 250 cows, grow organic wheat and barley mostly as feed for the cows, and produce a range of yogurts under their 'rora dairy' brand.

Over the years, trees and hedges have been planted to create rich habitats on the farm for a wide variety of wildlife.

Bruce will introduce us to the Aberdeenshire Sma Wids project, which supports the planting of small woodlands up to 0.25ha.

Sma Wids officially launched at BeefTech 2025 (Aberdeenshire Council website)

We’ll hear about the many benefits of planting trees, with particular focus on watercourses where trees can:

  • stabilise riverbanks
  • reduce the effects of flooding
  • create shade for livestock
  • prevent water temperatures rising

We’ll look at the initial thought process, the decision to plant trees and the challenges.

Come along and join the discussion.

Speakers from Scottish Forestry will be present to discuss funding and first steps to woodland creation.
